    Outside The Park Camping - North Rim

    DeMotte Campground

    Operated by the U.S. Forest Service. 16 miles/ 28km north of the canyon rim. No hookups. 1/2 of sites may be reserved. Generally open May 15 through October 15. for overnight camping, depending on snowfall. $22 for one or two vehicles. An Extra Vehicle Fee of $9.00 per vehicle, per night (space providing), will be collected on-site beginning with third vehicle. (Only 1 RV/trailer per site). Free evening programs.

    Dispersed Camping

    Is permitted in the national forest outside the park; there are restrictions, however. Inquire at North Rim Visitor Center inside park, or at Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center at Jacob Lake (928) 643-7298. In winter contact the North Kaibab Ranger District, Kaibab National Forest, P.O. Box 248, Fredonia, AZ 86022 or call (928) 643-7395.

    Jacob Lake Campground

    Operated by the U.S. Forest Service, 45 miles/75 km north of the North Rim, during the summer only, no hookups or reservations. $ 22 per night for one or two vehicle. An extra Vehicle Fee of $9.00 per vehicle, per night (space providing), will be collected on-site beginning with third vehicle. (Only 1 RV/trailer per site). Free evening programs.

    Kaibab Camper Village (Jacob Lake)

    Commercial campground located ¼ mile/0.5 km south of Jacob Lake on Arizona Highway 67. Full hook-ups available. Phone (928) 643-7804 May 15 through October 15. Off-season phone (928) 526-0924, outside AZ 1-800-525-0924.

     

    Winter Camping on the North Rim - When Roads Are Closed

    North Rim roads are closed to vehicles between December 1st and May 15th, and no visitor services are available. During these winter months snowshoers, and cross-country skiers are permitted to use the North Rim Campground, provided a backcountry use permit has been obtained in advance. – These permits are available through the South Rim Backcountry Information Center.     The closest place to park during this time is Jacob Lake. The hike through the snow from Jacob Lake to the North Rim Campground is around 45 miles. Hikers, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers will need to remain off the closed road (per Superintendent's Compendium re: safety from snowplows) and forge a path through the snow.

    • NOTE: The North Kaibab Trail and North Rim pipeline received significant damage from rockfall and landslides, making many areas unsafe and impassable for inner canyon hikers. In order to safely rebuild and maintain the North Kaibab Trail and repair damaged sections of pipeline, there will be a continuous trail closure in effect from April 12 through June 2, 2023. The closure area will be from Cottonwood Campground to the North Kaibab Trailhead. No hikers will be allowed to pass through this area under any circumstances.

    • Note about Snowmobiles: Snowmobiles are not permitted within the park.
