Notes: He stood five feet six inches tall, was pallid and pock-marked. He excelled in his studies and could have had a university career but accepted the call for missionaries from recruiter Juan Domingo Arricivita and joined the Mission of 1769. He was at Tumacácori for about a year along with Padre Gaspar Clemente. He took part in the Mass at Tubac on January 8, 1774, that sent Juan Bautista de Anza and his explorers on their way to discover a route to Alta California. Moreno left Tumacácori early in 1775 to be stationed at Caborca. He and Padre Pedro Font constructed the church at Pitiquito. He joined Diaz, Garces, and Barreneche on the Colorado River in 1780 and was massacred there the following year. The Yumas chopped his head off with an axe. |
