Alternative Trail Finder While upgrades to the pedestrian bridge that provides access to the popular Maryland Heights Trail are underway, it will be difficult to get to the trailhead. An easier plan may be to consider hiking other trails. Use this trail finder to find the best option for you.
Loudoun Heights Trail is a strenuous hike that requires much of a day, but the view from Split Rock Overlook rivals that of the view from Maryland Heights.
The Camp Hill and Appalachian Trail option includes the chance to take in the views from Jefferson Rock and Harper Cemetery. The walk to Jefferson Rock is the shortest option, though it involves climbing 62 steep, uneven stone steps. Harper Cemetery is a short distance beyond Jefferson Rock, and gives a beautiful view of the water gap. The Loudoun Heights Trail is one of the park's most challenging trails. At up to 7.5 miles in length with an elevation gain of 1,377 feet, this trail will take most of a day.
Schoolhouse Ridge South is a much less strenuous option, but is still lengthy at 3.7 miles in length. The elevation gain is only about 265 feet. The Bolivar Heights Trail begins with a beautiful view of much of the terrain that impacted the Battle of Harpers Ferry in 1862. Historic earthworks from the battle and exhibits along the trail help to tell the story of the battle.
The Schoolhouse Ridge North Trail, which connects to Bolivar Heights for those who don't mind a longer walk (up to 4.1 miles for both trails), has exhibits that share Confederate strategy. The Murphy-Chambers Farm Trail covers 1-3 miles and has outdoor exhibits and Civil War earthworks to explore. ![]() NPS/L. Taber |
