Start at the Paul S. Sarbanes Visitor and Education Center and continue along the Sea Wall Trail, taking in nature and history along the way. Learn about the Lazaretto Lighthouse and the role the Lazaretto Quarantine Station had in defending Baltimore during the 1814 bombardment. In celebration of the National Park Service's 110th birthday, US citizens and residents will not be be charged entrance fees at national parks on August 25, 2026! At Fort McHenry, that means entrance to the historic star fort is free of charge for those groups. The National Park Service was created on August 25, 1916, to "preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations." Over the hundred plus years, we've grown into more than 400 national parks and many programs that reach communities around the country—and even the world! Our birthday is part of National Park Week this year so come celebrate all week! Join the birthday fun on social media using #NPSBirthday, #NPS110, and #NationalParkWeek. Although Fort McHenry is known for its history, the 42-acre park is teeming with small animals and birds!
