NPS Centennial

The National Park Service turned 100 on August 25, 2016, and the entire year was quite a celebration! Throughout 2016, hundreds of millions of you ventured out to Find Your Park-learning, discovering, getting inspired, or simply having fun in national parks. Thank you for joining us!

The Find Your Park party will continue in 2017 as we invite you to continue your own journey to discover national parks and public lands. Share your stories at (and and with #FindYourPark / #EncuentraTuParque on social media.

National parks across the system engaged in a variety of activities to prepare for and celebrate the centennial. New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park was a big part of this effort. Take a look at what we did and join us as the National Park Service enters a new century in 2017!

  • Hokule'a Visited New Bedford & We Loved It!

    On July 5 - 8 at Coast Guard Park, south side of State Pier, visitors had the opportunity to meet the crew and view a traditional Hawaiian double-hulled voyage canoe, Hokule'a, as it made a historic visit to New Bedford. Read more

  • Success with BIERSTADT Nature & National Identity Exhibit!

    On Friday June 3rd the staff of New Beford Whaling National Historical Park joined the New Bedford Art Muesum/Artworks!, the City of New Bedford, and other partner organizations for the grand opening of the Centennial exhibit titled: BIERSTADT Nature & National Identity. Read more

  • New Bedford Area High School Students Contribute to New B Under the Sea Research

    "I never thought I'd be working with the National Park Service,” said a local high school student today. Thanks to a Park Stewards Grant from the National Park Foundation, students from Greater New Bedford Vocational Technical High School Environmental Science and Technology shop sunk a lobster pot in New Bedford harbor today-but they don’t plan on catching any lobsters.     The Youth Ambassador Program (YAP!) is excited to announce our new Teacher’s Resource Guide is now available online. The free resource guide is designed to accompany the Youth Ambassador Program’s debut album, Edutainment Movement.
