Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site, in partnership with the National Japanese American Historical Society, is hosting a two-day teacher workshop that will examine the experiences of persons of Japanese ancestry who were incarcerated in the Jerome and Rohwer (Arkansas) concentration camps during World War II. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5, 2023 in Little Rock; participants who apply and are accepted receive a $300 stipend. Note: any 4th Grade to 12th Grade Humanities, History, and/or Social Studies Teacher is eligible to apply for this workshop.
Join your educational colleagues for an open-ended inquiry into this critical historic moment when the personal experience of imprisoned people of Japanese ancestry intersects with 1940s Arkansas and U.S. labor history:
-
What is the legacy of their agricultural labor on the Arkansas Delta and vast areas of the Western American landscape?
-
What can their personal encounters in segregated Arkansas tell us about racial relations in 1940s America?
-
What new understandings can we glean with our visit to the World War II Japanese American Internment Museum in McGehee?
Schedule - March 4-5, 2023
Saturday, March 4 - Little Rock Central High School NHS will host Day 1 of the workshop in the site's visitor center; snacks and lunch will be provided.
Sunday, March 5 - bus trip to visit the World War II Japanese American Internment Museum in McGehee, Arkansas and theJerome and Rohwer World War II War Relocation Authority Centers; snacks and lunch will be provided.
Workshop Application and Registration - Deadline for application is Saturday, February 25, 2023 or until full.
