36 CFR §1.6 Permits

Special events requiring a permit such as bicycle events, running events, film/photography events, and other similar group events with more than 25 participants are prohibited over Memorial Day Weekend, on the Fourth of July, and over Labor Day weekend.

A Special Use Permit is not required for First Amendment activity for groups smaller than 25 people that occurs at the following designated locations:

  • Humpback Rocks Visitor Center, MP 5.8
  • James River Visitor Center, MP 63.6
  • Peaks of Otter Visitor Center, MP 85.9
  • Rocky Knob Visitor Center, MP 169
  • Blue Ridge Music Center, MP 212.8
  • Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, MP 294
  • Linn Cove Visitor Center, MP 304.4
  • Linville Falls Visitor Center, MP 316.4
  • Museum of North Carolina Minerals, MP 331
  • Crabtree Falls, MP 339.5
  • Craggy Gardens Visitor Center, MP 364.5
  • Folk Art Center, Mile Post 382.2
  • Parkway Headquarters and Visitor Center Locations, MP 384.4
  • Waterrock Knob Visitor Center, MP 451.2

Any First Amendment activity for a group larger than 25 people at any location or for a group of any size that occurs outside of the list of designated areas requires a Special Use Permit.
