During the orientation, attendees are provided an overview of the National Park Service and the history of Steamtown NHS, meet current staff and volunteers, learn about the different positions needed to operate trains safely, have a guided tour of the locomotive shop and our operating equipment, and gain a sense of the teamwork and esprit that are part of being a member of the Steamtown NHS Train and Engine Service. If after the orientation, you remain keen for the challenge of working your way toward becoming a train conductor and/or locomotive engineer, a training schedule for the 2020 Steamtown NHS railroad operating season will be provided. But the first step to begin your highly-structured “apprenticeship” that meets Federal Railroad Administration standards and Northeast Operating Rules Advisory Committee (NORAC) rulebook criteria is to attend this mandatory orientation. Note that some former Steamtown NHS Train and Engine Service volunteers now work for commercial railroads, having gained experience through this program! And even if that is not your goal, the smiles and wonderment of children riding our trains is a priceless reward for your efforts.
Pre-registration is required. Please contact volunteer coordinator Larry Scucci or 570-340-5240. Once registered, you will receive information on where on site the orientation will be held.
Located in downtown Scranton, Pa., Steamtown NHS is open daily from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. From I-81 follow exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway); then follow the brown and white signs to the park entrance at Lackawanna Avenue and Cliff Street (GPS: N 41.41, W 75.67). General park information is available by phoning (570) 340-5206 during regular business hours, or by visiting the park website anytime.
