The Cedar Run Trail in the central section of Shenandoah National Park will be closed for repairs for about two weeks beginning May 6, 2024. The trail has completely washed out and poses a fall risk for hikers.

The popular trail with multiple cascades and waterfalls is often paired with Whiteoak Canyon to create a 7-mile loop. Whiteoak Canyon Trail, which also features several waterfalls will not be affected by the closure. The Cedar Run Trailhead is at mile 45.6 on Skyline Drive and connects to the Whiteoak Canyon Trail near the park boundary in Syria, Virginia. Hikers will still be able to enter the park at the boundary but will only be able to access the Whiteoak Canyon Trail. The Skyline Drive trailhead for Whiteoak Canyon is at mile 42.6.

Shenandoah’s trail crew will begin work on May 6, 2024 and hope to complete work by May 16. The steepness of the terrain does not allow a safe way to circumvent the eroded area so the entire trail will remain closed while crews work to repair the trail and mitigate future erosion.
