At the air quality station in Shenandoah National Park, scientists monitor air quality as part of a nationwide air quality monitoring network. The park’s air quality monitoring program has been in operation for almost 40 years with a focus on visibility, atmospheric deposition, and ozone monitoring. In addition, scientists collect weather data to help understand the effects of local weather on air pollution levels. The scientific equipment used for the program gathers important data that are used by local and national decision makers. The air quality station where all this data is collected is one of the few air quality monitoring sites at a high elevation (3,512 ft) in the mid-Atlantic region.
