SAN FRANCISCO—Appreciation, stewardship, education, preservation and inspiration — these words adorn the winning artwork submitted for Golden Gate National Recreation Area’s 50th anniversary poster contest. The talented students of Ms. Szetzo’s fourth grade class at Gordon J. Lau Elementary used colored pencils to create their vision for the park’s future.
The school, in San Francisco’s Chinatown neighborhood, was one of several to participate in the contest, which was open to Bay Area fourth grade classes. Submissions were accepted between November 16, 2022 and January 20, 2023 and included lesson plans and prompts about how the nature and history of the park would influence its next 50 years.
“The Golden Gate Bridge represents the San Francisco Bay Area and a symbol of the Golden State,” the class said in their entry. “The Park Ranger was important, so we included her to keep the park safe.”
Golden Gate NRA kicked off its 50th anniversary year on October 27, 2022 with a special ceremony featuring partners from both north and south of the Golden Gate Bridge. The poster contest was one of many interpretive programs the park has been offering to engage communities while sharing in the year-long celebration.
The top three entries for the contest were awarded prizes and are on display at the Presidio Visitor Center, where interactive exhibits tell the history of the park and its creation in 1972.
