LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas - Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site will host an online Civil Rights Educator Institute from Tuesday, July 13 through Thursday, July 15, 2021. This free professional development course is open to educators, community workers, and cultural activists; requests to participate in this virtual program will be accepted through March 31, 2021 or until all openings are filled.
The 2021 Civil Rights Educator Institute (CREI) will examine intersections between the U.S. Constitution and moments from the Civil Rights Movement presented in a design laboratory for social engagement that provides a space for self-reflection and inquiry into issues related to human rights and education for liberation. This three-day workshop will allow for an exchange of knowledge and experiences with reflection between participants in an intensive learning community.
The program will offer experiential approaches and narrative strategies as tools to explore civil rights history and human rights struggles. Attendees will hear from various educators and civil rights activists to critically engage with issues of rights, struggle, story and power of place as well as create innovative ways of connecting past to present.
The CREI is a place to build community and solidarity, share multiple views, and explore the work of educators as connected to civil and human rights. Participants will create a knowledge camp and initiate concentric conversation to diminish social and cultural barriers and receive tools for social action and education.
Space is limited; requests to virtually attend the 2021 CREI can be sent by email to Park Ranger Brian Schwieger at brian_schwieger@nps.gov.
