BAR HARBOR, MAINE – The newly renovated Hulls Cove Visitor Center opened its doors to visitors on Wednesday, June 19. Work was completed by local contractors, King Construction Services Inc. of Jonesport, Maine (with offices in Ellsworth) to address a number of long overdue improvements to the center. This recent upgrade was funded through visitor entrance fees while interior displays and exhibits were supported through generous contributions from the park store.
“We are excited to open the doors to the Hulls Cove Visitor Center,” said Superintendent Kevin Schneider. “Visitors will experience new information desks, an expanded park store, and more restrooms.”
Other improvements include new carpet, a family restroom, and a separate entrance to the park store from outside the building. Interior displays and exhibits convey real-time information relevant to planning, several over-sized maps, and a new public display of pieces from the Acadia Artist-in-Residence program. Sound-dampening design and materials should help to reduce the volume of noise in the center.
Issues outside of the scope of this project remain at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center which was designed decades ago for a small fraction of the visitors the park has today. Among the notable shortcomings, accessible parking is limited and visitors can still only access the building via 52 steps. The park film is no longer available as the theater was removed to create space for the renovation. Operating hours and seasons for park facilities including the Hulls Cove Visitor Center are available online.
