SCRANTON, Pa. – Steamtown National Historic Site (NHS) is pleased to introduce Spanish-language Junior Ranger programs. The four free programs will assist English as a Second Language (ESL) visitors of all ages in learning about the history of steam railroading while exploring the site. They also get to take home a Junior Ranger badge as a memento of their visit.

The programs offer fun and thought-provoking activities that enable visitors to develop a deeper understanding of the many ways in which steam railroading influenced American industrialization, commerce, and society between 1850 and 1950. Explorando Steamtown is for those ages 5 and under, while two Programa de Junior Ranger are offered, one for ages 6-8, and the other for ages 9-12. The final option is for visitors ages 13-130!

By offering the Junior Ranger programs in Spanish, the site hopes to be more welcoming to the growing Hispanic population of northeastern Pennsylvania as well as native-Spanish speakers throughout the greater tri-state area and beyond. Park Ranger Flor Blum, who recently joined the Steamtown NHS staff, put her bilingual skills to use crafting the Spanish-language Junior Ranger programs to help the park reach new audiences who may not be familiar with their National Park system. Besides the Junior Ranger programs, Ranger Flor looks forward to assisting Spanish speaking families and groups make the most from their visits to Steamtown NHS; groups wishing to schedule future visits may call Flor at (570) 340-5316 for more information.

Located in downtown Scranton, Pa., Steamtown NHS is open daily from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., with no admission charge.
