Applications Now Open for GS-5 Seasonal Park Guides for Summer 2025

  • Seasonal park guides welcome park visitors, staff the info desk, sell train tickets, lead daily programs and tours, staff special events, and help interpret Steamtown’s story on our local and long-distance train rides.
  • Seasonal positions are full-time and run May through September (shorter or longer seasons may be available if you're looking to fit employment into a college or teacher schedule). Will require holiday and weekend work.
  • $18.96/hour (may go up slightly with the annual federal cost-of-living adjustment), plus four hours each annual and sick leave earned every two weeks.

Application now open for a GS-5 Park Ranger (American Sign Language) for Summer 2025

To improve accessibility and the visitor experience for Deaf or hard of hearing visitors in our museum spaces and aboard our train rides, Steamtown National Historic Site is hiring a park ranger skilled in American Sign Language to join us this upcoming summer. The position will be employed full-time and is expected to work from approximately May through October 2025.

Park Ranger (ASL) Duties Include:

  • Welcoming visitors and providing park information
  • Leading ASL-interpreted tours
  • Assisting with visitor operations
  • Developing educational videos
  • Assisting with special events
  • Working closely with community partners, including Scranton School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Commonwealth University: Bloomsburg

Application now open for a Career Seasonal WG-10 Locomotive Engineer

(Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for approximately 11 months and be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.)

Locomotive Engineer Duties include:
  • Serve as a qualified as a locomotive inspector of historic steam and diesel locomotives and historic railroad cars in accordance with the Federal Railway Administration and Railroad regulations, specifications, and procedures.
  • Ensure that train operations, railyard and mainline, operate in accordance with all applicable National Park Service (NPS), Northeast Operating Rules Advisory Committee (NORAC} and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) policies and regulations
  • Assist the Railroad Operations Supervisor with development of the park railroad safety program, including training, program administration, and qualifying paid and volunteer engineers and firemen.
  • Operate a wide range of locomotive controls including numerous switches and valves, throttle, reverser and train and engine brakes and is required to manually, as needed, hand fire steam locomotives, including cutting coal in the tender.

Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) - Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.

NPS Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) - In partnership with the American Conservation Experience (ACE) and the NPS Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP), the park is hosting a curatorial assistant. The selected ACE member will assist curatorial staff with collection management activities and participate in professional development opportunities.

The CRDIP introduces students and recent graduates, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. "Underrepresented" and "diversity" are broad terms in this context meant to reach as many students and recent graduates as possible from all backgrounds.

Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) - a partnership between the National Park Service and the Student Conservation Association.

Over the past several months, two apprentices have been immersed in a hands-on environment within the locomotive shop working on a variety of projects, honing their skills, and learning tricks of the trade. This apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity for these apprentices to learn, grow, and develop their talents in a field that keeps the wheels of innovation turning. Learn more about TTAP.
