POINT REYES STATION, Calif. – Late this summer, a new arrival made it to Drakes Beach at Point Reyes National Seashore—a beach wheelchair available for visitor use.
The wheelchair is equipped with large, wide wheels that can roll across the sand without sinking. The wheelchair allows visitors of differing abilities to participate in beach activities and enjoy the sun and fresh air. It provides a comfortable ride and is suitable for people who have difficulty walking on sand.
"We are thrilled to make our popular Drakes Beach more accessible to visitors of all abilities," says park superintendent Craig Kenkel. "Point Reyes National Seashore strives for full and equal participation for all visitors, and this is an important addition to that effort."
The beach wheelchair is free and available on request via an online reservation
Reservations can be made in two-hour blocks. When making the reservation, make sure to include the date and time you want to use the wheelchair and provide at least five days' notice. The wheelchair is located on the beachside of the Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center.
The purchase of the beach wheelchair was made possible from donors through Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA). PRNSA is the 501-c3 non-profit fundraising partner of Point Reyes National Seashore.
The slopes and conditions of the beach are highly variable given weather conditions. Visitors are encouraged to be aware of weather conditions, including tides, before visiting.
