Point Reyes National Seashore announces its annual summer weekend beach closure for the protection of federally-threatened nesting snowy plovers. The closure is a small stretch of beach located between North Beach parking lot and the mouth of Abbotts Lagoon. It is in effect for each Saturday, Sunday and holiday from May 29, 2021, through Labor Day, September 6, 2021.

This closure is designed to help ensure success for the snowy plover during its nesting season, which is already well underway. Fewer visitors in this area will minimize disturbance to nests, chicks, and breeding adults during this critical time. The closure will help chicks stay warm, have enough food, and stay hidden from predators.

So far this season, 18 nests have been found on Point Reyes beaches: seven on Kehoe Beach, two in the Abbotts Lagoon restoration area, five between Abbotts Lagoon and North Beach parking lot, two between North Beach and South Beach, and two on Limantour Beach. One nest has hatched (on Limantour Beach), with two more nests projected to hatch in the coming week.

Please remember to recreate responsibly and bring water and snacks, wear comfortable shoes, and dress in layers for your visit.
