This August, Redwood Renewal projects will resume work from 2018 and preparations have already begun. The giant redwoods of Muir Woods National Monument (Muir Woods) are no strangers to change. The area has been influenced by humans for decades, even prior to its designation as a national monument in 1908.

Redwood Renewal is a seven-year initiative that will ensure evergreen preservation of the coastal redwoods and a healthier Redwood Creek through a family of projects at Muir Woods. For trail closure information or access changes, visit the park’s Alert and Conditions webpage prior to your visit.

Visitors will see new trails built, trails retired that are too close to the creek, water/wastewater rehabilitation upgrades, a new lift station, and salmon habitat improvements to assist the return of coho salmon. These projects will be on-going until final completion in 2023 to create a resilient Redwood Creek.

2019 Redwood Renewal Projects Include:

  • In early August, the Salmon Habitat Enhancement Project will begin to improve the survival of young endangered salmon in Redwood Creek and tributaries.

  • In September, work will begin on critical components of the water and wastewater collection systems.

  • In late summer and fall, the final phases of the Lift Station project will commence.

To conduct the Salmon Habitat Enhancement Project work, fish in the creek will be relocated out of harm’s way by experienced biologists, and then the work zone will be drained of water. After work is completed, the restored creek banks will be re-vegetated with native plants and the project area will be closely monitored by biologists as it recovers.

While this important work is happening, visitors may experience some temporary trail closures that may impact their visit. Park staff will be on-hand to answer questions and signs will be posted indicating trail status.

The park is popular with locals and international visitors alike. Reservations required—please make your parking and shuttle reservations prior to your next visit at GoMuirWoods.com.
