In preparation for the busy summer in Gettysburg, Eisenhower National Historic Site and the Adams County Office for Aging invite active, older citizens to participate in the Volunteer Senior Ranger Corps. On Thursday, May 2, from 9 am to 3 pm, volunteers are needed for the annual cleaning and preservation of President Eisenhower’s farm equipment and vehicles. The barns will also be spruced up by removing cobwebs, cleaning windows and sweeping floors. All supplies, tools, and personal protective equipment will be provided as well as a box lunch. In addition to the May 2 event, the Volunteer Senior Ranger Corps currently has several projects underway. Additional volunteers are needed to interpret at the Eisenhower show barn to explain to visitors the Eisenhower cattle operation and visits by world leaders. Training, uniform and reading materials are provided. Another project needing more volunteers is tending the Eisenhower vegetable garden. All the supplies and seeds are provided and volunteer gardeners get to keep the harvest. Extra vegetables are donated to the community soup kitchen and other local social service agencies. Volunteers are also needed to help with parking for World War II Weekend in September.
For more information or to volunteer for the farm equipment preservation and barn project, contact Linda Thompson at the Adams County Office for Aging at 717-334-9296 or 800-548-3240.
