Lovell Wy: – Bighorn Canyon is announcing the suspension of the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program for the summer season of 2020. This decision was a hard one for the leadership team, as this is an important program that provides both work and life experiences for high school students. However, the health and safety of visitors, employees, volunteers, and partners at Bighorn Canyon are the highest priorities for the park at this time.
Normally, YCC participants would have been notified by mid-April if they were selected. This year the park waited while the leadership team discussed at what point in a phased opening plan we could safely bring the YCC participants to work per Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), local and state, and department of education guidelines. The park leadership determined it could not safely bring students to work until phase two or even three of the opening plan. Not knowing when those phases may come into effect, the park decided to suspend the program for the year to allow participants enough time to arrange for other summer employment.
The funding for fiscal year 2020 projects will be added to 2021 funding. This will allow the park to hire additional youth during the 2021 summer season.
