Jemez Springs, NM - The National Park Service plans to complete the Cajete Meadow prescribed burn within Valles Caldera National Preserve during the week of April 12th, 2021.

The prescribed burn includes 149 acres in Cajete Meadow - located in the southwest area of the preserve.

Prescribed fire is part of a science-based framework to reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire and allow low-intensity fire to play its vital natural role in a fire-adapted ecosystem. Each prescribed burn is designed to meet specific objectives and will be managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority.

Smoke is monitored to ensure that the New Mexico Environment Department's Air Quality Bureau regulations are met. Smoke may be visible from US-550 and NM-4 as well as in Jemez Springs, Los Griegos, La Cueva, and Los Alamos.

Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures. Information can be found at the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) website, or by calling 505-827-0006. Information on HEPA Filter Loan Program assistance can also be found online.
