Jemez Springs, NM – With winter concluding, the National Park Service has completed its prescribed pile burning in Valles Caldera National Preserve for the season. These burns are part of a prescribed burn project to reduce material left from previous forest thinning work.
Over the past three months, fire crews successfully burned piles across 297 acres on South Mountain and 162 acres in Sulphur Canyon, totaling 459 acres of successful fuel reduction in the park.
Fire crews are monitoring both burn units, and there are currently no signs of fire activity. The crews will continue to monitor the units until they are officially declared out this spring.
“We are grateful for all the hard work that the fire crews put in to burn these piles over the winter,” said Superintendent Jorge Silva-Bañuelos. “These fuel treatments are critical to reducing the risk of future high-severity fires and move us closer to our goal of managing natural fires to benefit this fire-adapted ecosystem.”
