SCRANTON, Pa. – The Visitor Center at Steamtown National Historic Site is now open to the public once again. Visitors can enter through the front doors and enjoy a climate-controlled space, access restrooms, speak with park rangers, and learn what they need to know to get their visit started. The Visitor Center serves as the ideal starting point for exploring the park, offering access to trip-planning assistance from staff and volunteers, park information and Junior Ranger booklets, interpretive exhibits, indoor restrooms and drinking fountains, and direct entry to the core complex, including turntable area, History Museum, Technology Museum, and Roundhouse.
Park hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, with the last entry at 4:45 p.m.
To better concentrate staffing within the core complex, the park has adjusted daily operations. Beginning this week, the outdoor Tickets & Information kiosk will open only on days when train rides operate, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On all other days, visitors should proceed directly to the Visitor Center for information and services.
The building closed in November 2022 following the failure of the park’s centralized HVAC system. Reopening the facility marks a major achievement, made possible by the skill and dedication of park maintenance staff who worked behind the scenes to bring climate control back online.
With air conditioning restored, the Visitor Center resumes its role as a functional and comfortable starting point for park visitors. Seasonal updates and changes to public access will be shared through the park’s website and official social media platforms.
