Steamtown NHS Announces 2016 Fall Foliage Excursions

SCRANTON, Pa. – As Mother Nature changes her colors for the Fall season, Steamtown National Historic Site is scheduling train excursions through some of the most beautiful fall countryside of the nearby Pocono Mountains! A total of ten fall foliage excursions, all powered by historic diesel locomotives, are planned for this season.Reservations for all fall foliage excursions open at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, September 23.

This year, we are planning two trips to Gouldsboro, Pennsylvania. On Saturdays, October 1 and 29, we'll venture aboard a roundtrip excursion departing the Steamtown Boarding Platform at 11:00 a.m. and returning at 3:00 p.m. Step back to the Roaring 1920s at the historic Gouldsboro train station. Food, drink, books and souvenirs will be available for purchase. Ticket pricing is $34 for adults, ages 16-61, $29 for seniors, ages 62 and older, $22 for children ages 6-15. Children to age 5 require a free ticket.

Trips to Moscow will depart at 12:30 p.m. on October 2, 10, 15 and 22, and are expected to return at 3:00 p.m. The Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Chapter NRHS, which leases the former Moscow passenger station and freight house, will offer light refreshments for sale during the train's layovers. Moscow excursion tickets are priced at $24 for adults 16-61, $22 for seniors 62 and older, and $17 for children ages 6-15. Children to age 5 require a "no-charge" ticket.

On October 8, we head to East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania for the borough's Fall Foliage Festival and Fireman's Picnic. We'll depart at 9:00 a.m. and return at 5:00 p.m. Visit this quaint, historic town and remember to make time to visit the East Stroudsburg Railroad Tower. Many local restaurants will also be open during the layover. Tickets are priced at $54, adults 16-61, $49, seniors 62 and older, and $32, children ages 6-15. Children to age 5 require a "no-charge" ticket.

A trip to Tobyhanna Station is planned for Sunday, October 9. This excursion is scheduled to depart at 11:00 a.m. and return at 3:00 p.m.The National Railway Historical Society, Pocono Chapter will have light refreshments for sale at the Tobyhanna Station, which also includes a walking tour to an ice house. Ticket prices for the excursion are $34 for adults 16 to 61, $29 for seniors 62 and older, and $22 for children ages 6-15. Children 5 and younger require a "no-charge" ticket.

An excursion to Delaware Water Gap Station is scheduled to depart at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 16, returning at 5:00 p.m. Tour this historic town and enjoy fall activities during your visit! Tickets are priced at $54, adults 16-61, $49, seniors 62 and older, and $32, children ages 6-15. Children to age 5 require a "no-charge" ticket.

Lastly, we've scheduled an excursion to Cresco, Pennsylvania for Sunday, October 23. Enjoy a musical visit with live guitar music and light refreshments. The restored depot preserves aspects of life in the early days of the Poconos. A show of historic autos is also part of the train visit, weather-permitting. Departs Steamtown at 11:30 a.m. and returns at 4:00 p.m. Excursion ticket prices are $34 for adults 16 to 61, $29 for seniors 62 and older, and $22 for children ages 6-15. Children 5 and younger require a "no-charge" ticket.

The 30-minute "Scranton Limited" short train rides inside the park boundaries will operate on Fridays and Saturdays in September and October, then continue on Saturdays through November 19; the "Nay Aug Limited" short train rides will operate on September Sundays thru November 27. All short train rides depart from the Roundhouse boarding area at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. There is an additional $5 charge for this ride. The daily entrance fee is $7 per person, all ages 16 and older. Children 15 and under, accompanied by an adult, are admitted to the park at no charge. The entrance fee includes parking and access to the outdoor grounds, the museum complex, scheduled walking tours, and the park movie, "Steel and Steam."

Located in downtown Scranton, Pa., Steamtown NHS is open daily from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. From I-81 follow exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway);then, follow the brown and white signs to the main entrance at Lackawanna and Cliff Avenues.
