CALAIS, MAINE – The National Park Service (NPS) invites the public to provide feedback on Saint Croix Island International Historic Site’s Draft Environmental Assessment/Assessment of Effect for Disposing of the McGlashan-Nickerson House (Draft EA). The Draft EA is available for public comment through November 30, 2018.

The purpose of the Draft EA is to improve resource stewardship and visitor experiences at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site (SACR) by focusing limited NPS resources on protecting the site’s fundamental resources and values. Because the McGlashan-Nickerson house is not a fundamental resource of SACR and because it is no longer necessary for administrative purposes or visitor services, the NPS is proposing to declare the house excess to the needs of the agency and to dispose of it in accordance with federal regulations.

The Draft EA evaluates three alternatives for the disposition of the McGlashan-Nickerson house: a no action alternative, an alternative that would provide for removal and relocation of the house, and an alternative that would result (if no interest is expressed in the structure) in the documentation and demolition of the house.

To assist the public in understanding the alternatives and providing comments, the NPS is hosting an open house at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site’s Ranger Station (84 St. Croix Drive, Calais) on Monday, November 19, 2018 from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. (ET).

The Draft EA and instructions for how to comment online (preferred method) are available at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/SACRHouse and by clicking “Open for Comment.” Paper copies will be available weekdays at Acadia National Park, the SACR Ranger Station, as well as the Calais Free Library and the Peavey Memorial Library in Eastport.

Written comments may be submitted to Saint Croix Island International Historic Site, Attn: Draft EA for McGlashan-Nickerson House, P.O. Box 247, Calais, Maine 04619.  Written comments will also be accepted at the public open house (comment forms will be available). Comments will not be accepted verbally, via fax, email, or any format other than those specified above. Public comments are due no later than Friday, November 30, 2018.
