The National Park Service preserves Saint Croix Island International Historic Site as a monument to the beginning of the United States and Canada. It was here that Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons with his company of 78 men established a French settlement in 1604-05. In cooperation with Parks Canada, the National Park Service educates the public about that heroic effort, its context, and its consequences.

“I am honored to be selected for this important position at Saint Croix Island,” said Zwelling. “After serving as a journalist for several years, I started my NPS career in Washington, D.C at Rock Creek Park. I have a deep commitment to education and history, and I look forward to working with the surrounding communities to protect this special place.”
With more than seven years of experience with the National Park Service (NPS), Zwelling has held numerous positions since he started his career at Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C. He has served at several parks including Petersburg National Battlefield and Rock Creek Park as well as at the U.S. Capitol Building. Prior to the park service he was a print reporter with various outlets in Washington, D.C., and New York state.

Zwelling also holds a Masters in History from University of Nebraska and is working toward a Master’s in Business Administration from Fitchburg State University. An avid reader of detective fiction and American history, a lifelong stamp collector, student of vexillology (the study of flags), and a fan of the Toronto Blue Jays since the team’s beginnings, he will be moving to the Calais, ME area and looks forward to his new role.
