Join Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on September 26 for a Day of Service and Celebration
(Munising, Mich.) - Be part of an unprecedented event on September 26 when Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and national parks across the country invite you to make America’s Best Idea – the national parks – even better. Presented by the National Park Service and National Park Foundation, it will be a special day of service and celebration for visitors and volunteers to experience their parks and catch a sneak preview of the new Ken Burns documentary The National Parks: America’s Best Idea premiering on PBS on September 27.
"We are excited about the opportunity to greet old friends and neighbors and welcome new visitors to explain how America’s first national lakeshore is part of America’s Best Idea,” said Superintendent Jim Northup. “Making that best idea even better is our goal and one we can only accomplish with the support of our visitors, volunteers, the community and our partners.”
As part of this very special day, we will be hosting a number of special events in the park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Four of the park’s Visitor Centers (the Interagency Visitor Center in Munising, Miners Castle, Munising Falls and Grand Sable) will offer special refreshments and a sneak peak of the new Ken Burns film The National Parks: America’s Best Idea that premieres on September 27.
Extra park staff will be out and about in the park greeting visitors and encouraging them to both enjoy and help take care of the park.
Many of our Adopt-a-Trail and Adopt-a-Campsite Volunteers will be out working on their respective sections of trail or campsites.
Junior Rangers and their parents will be collecting seeds from heritage apple trees in the park.
From 10 a.m. to noon, interested visitors are invited to help plant native seedlings at Miners Beach. Also from 10 a.m. to noon, visitors are invited to help prepare for winter visitation at the Log Slide.
The Pictured Rocks event is just one of many occurring in the national parks across the country. The nationwide program is cosponsored by the National Park Foundation, the National Park Service’s Congressionally-chartered philanthropic partner. See www.nps.gov/September26 for more information.
The park is also hosting a special viewing of The National Parks: America’s Best Idea at the Falling Rock Café in Munising, each evening from 7:45-10:00 p.m., beginning Sunday, September 27, through Friday, October 2.
