A road construction project to improve access at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore will require a temporary closure in the coming weeks. The Chapel Road will be temporarily closed from 8 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, to 6 p.m., on Friday, October 16.

The temporary closure affects the northernmost mile of Chapel Road. Gerou Excavating, Inc., will replace culverts and place gravel on this road section just south of the Chapel parking lot.

Hikers and overnight backpackers will need to make alternative plans for parking during this period. The road and parking lot will re-open as soon as the work is complete.

"We very much appreciate Gerou's willingness to schedule and accomplish the work as late as possible in the color season so fewer visitors will be affected by the road closure," remarked Facility Manager Chris Case. Culvert replacement and gravel will improve drainage, protect the adjacent watershed, and improve access to the popular camping and hiking opportunities in the Chapel area of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Case added.
