Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is pleased to announce the Artists In Residence for 2006 are Lucia Harrison and Sharon Sharp. Lucia Harrison, from Tacoma, Washington, is a book artist and visual artist and is a member of the faculty (Visual Arts) at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. Sharon Sharp, from Boone, North Carolina, has an extensive background in book arts, teaching and poetry. They met in 2002 while taking a class on letterpress-printing and handmade books at Penland School of Crafts, an internationally known educational center for fine arts.
Sharon and Lucia will present a program “Handmade Book Journey” at the Alger County Heritage Center on Thursday, September 7, at 7 p.m. They will discuss their work and then conduct a workshop where participants may make a simple artist book from materials provided. The Heritage Center is located at 1496 Washington Street in Munising.
During late August and early September, Sharon and Lucia will be staying in the park for two weeks spending their time drawing, photographing, and taking notes. If you happen to see them in their journeys through the park, they are more than happy to talk about their work. They will be creating a hand-made book for the park in the months after completing their stay.
