Petrified Forest National Park allows overnight stays only by backpacking/hiking into the designated Petrified Forest National Wilderness Area. Please be prepared for this adventure!

The application shall be submitted so as to reach the superintendent at least 72 hours in advance of the proposed event. Processing times will vary depending on the complexity of the proposed activity. Processing can take 6–8 after submittal of complete package, submitting your permit application as soon as possible will help expedite the process.

The superintendent must issue a permit or a written denial within ten days of receiving a complete and fully executed application. If the application is incomplete when it first arrives to us, this will delay your permit.

Urgent requests cannot be accommodated, however, submitting a complete permit package will help in expediting your permit process. Please do your best to submit your complete application well ahead of time. Any application fees must be received prior to processing.
