Sustainability

The visitor center building obtained a Gold level certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) from the U.S. Green Building Council. Some of the sustainability features include:

• Solar panels on the roof that provide about 10 percent of the power required by the building.

• A light shaft in the roof, similar to a sun roof, that lets in natural light.

• Rainwater harvesting system on the roof, that provides water used to flush toilets in the facility’s restrooms.

• 95 percent of the materials from the previous buildings that the visitor center replaced were recycled rather than being sent to a landfill.
