Contact: Darlene M. Koontz, (530) 595-4444, ext. 5101 Lassen Volcanic National Park will waive entrance fees on August 14 and 15 along with other national parks throughout the country. "We hope many local community members will wave a chance to visit their nearby national park during this time," stated Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz. The Park Service wants people to see that national parks are places for everyone to have fun, reconnect with nature and history, and build a sense of ownership and stewardship for these areas and the environment. This weekend will be in addition to the fee-free days scheduled for National Public Lands Day, September 26, and Veterans Day, November 11. Lassen Volcanic National Park offers over 150 miles of hiking trails which range in difficulty from a strenuous seven mile round-trip hike up Brokeoff Mountain to a gentle two mile stroll around Manzanita Lake. For sheer beauty and rugged mountain scenery the Brokeoff Trail is one of the best in the park. The Brokeoff Mountain Trail climbs steadily through open meadows and forest for two miles and then through scattered hemlocks and finally above timberline to the top. At the west end of the mountain just before the last half-mile of the climb, there is a good view of Mt. Shasta. From the top there are spectacular views of the surrounding mountain scenery. Each trail in Lassen has its own unique beauty for visitors to discover. Some park trails may still have lingering snow. Please stay on defined pathways through snowfields. Sturdy hiking boots and trekking poles are advised. Be prepared for rapidly changing conditions by carrying high energy food, and plenty of water and by dressing in layers.
