Celebrate National Winter Trails Day, Saturday, January 12, with a snowshoe adventure at Lassen Volcanic National Park. In addition to the regularly scheduled weekend ranger-led snowshoe walks from the Kohm-Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center, visitors may join a special Manzanita Lake snowshoe walk exploring Manzanita Lake area winter ecology. A bountiful December storm provided an excellent early season snowpack for winter recreation at both the south and north entrance of the park.
To participate in a ranger-led snowshoe hike, adults and children 8 and older should meet outside the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center or outside the Loomis Ranger Station at 1:15 p.m. The route and distance varies with each group, however walks generally last about 2 hours and can be physically challenging. Please bring warm clothing, waterproof boots or shoes, water, and food for an enjoyable and safe experience. Snowshoes are provided; a $1 donation is suggested. Snowshoes for the Manzanita Lake walk are limited and will be available to the first 30 people. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own equipment.
To provide more opportunities to discover winter in the Manzanita Lake area, two additional ranger-led snowshoe walks will be offered this season. Meet outside the Loomis Museum at 1:15 p.m. February 9 and March 9, conditions permitting.
Visitors traveling to the park should be prepared for winter weather and driving conditions. Carry tire chains in your vehicle from October through May, along with extra food, water, and blankets.
