MINERAL, Calif. — The National Park Service is in the early stages of developing a design concept plan for the Manzanita Lake Developed Area of Lassen Volcanic National Park and is seeking public input on preliminary concepts and ideas. Public input will help inform the National Park Service of public needs, shape the development of management strategies, and assist the park in preparing for the future National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process. Lassen Volcanic National Park proposes improving facilities and opportunities to better align with public needs and expectations. The improvements will protect park resources, offer varied quality visitor experiences, enhance visitor and staff safety, and coincide with the park’s operational capacity.
Public comments are invited through September 26, 2022.

About the Lassen Volcanic National Park Manzanita Lake Developed Area Design Concept Plan
Lassen Volcanic National Park is known for its vast geologic history and stunning landscape views. With numerous recreation and interpretive opportunities, visitors to the park can experience a variety of unique activities. The facilities within the Manzanita Lake Naturalist's Services Historic District (Manzanita Lake) have been a primary visitor use facility in Lassen Volcanic National Park since the late 1920s. Manzanita Lake has undergone several major developments since its creation.
Rapid growth in day use visitation and changing use patterns in the park have degraded natural and cultural resources, diminished the quality of the visitor experience, increased visitor and staff safety concerns, and strained the park’s facilities and ability to perform daily operations. The purpose of the Manzanita Lake Developed Area Design Concept Plan is to improve the park’s Manzanita Lake Developed Area visitor facilities and respectfully rehabilitate historic structures to accommodate growing visitation and enhance visitors’ experiences through an adaptive lens that accounts for future needs. The plan would provide direction for restoring and preserving natural and cultural resources, improving opportunities for accessibility, and enhancing existing outstanding visitor opportunities.
The park has developed a set of design proposals. These site-specific designs are best understood by reading the descriptions and viewing the maps in the Lassen Volcanic National Park Manzanita Lake Developed Area StoryMap (https://tinyurl.com/yy6vdj59).
