Lassen Volcanic National Park Proposes Increases for Entrance Fees

Park Superintendent Mary G. Martin announced that Lassen Volcanic National Park proposes to increase entrance fees in 2008. Starting January 1, 2008 entrance fees would increase from $10.00 to $20.00 per vehicle and from $5.00 to $10.00 per individual entering on bicycle, by foot or other individual means. The new fee for motorcycles would be $15.00. The entrance fee will remain valid for a period of 7 days. The Lassen Annual Pass will change from $25.00 to $40.00 and will only be honored at Lassen Volcanic National Park. It will be valid for one year from the month of issue and can be signed on the reverse by two persons, one of whom must be present with a valid photo ID when presenting the pass to enter the park. As part of future rate settings, the park is interested in what visitors consider is appropriate for entrance fees and camping. “We invite the public to give us their thoughts and comments on the fees charged at Lassen Volcanic National Park,” stated Superintendent Martin. The Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (2004), which replaced the Recreational Fee Demonstration Authority, allows park areas to collect and retain up to 80% of their fees. These fees provide for enhanced visitor enjoyment. Since 1998, an estimated $725 million has been retained by the NPS to accomplish projects such as rehabilitating historic structures, improving hiking trails and campgrounds, replacing aging water and sewer systems, providing new exhibits and interpretive signs, providing accessibility to visitors with disabilities, and protecting natural and cultural resources. The new fee rates will provide additional funding to continue these kinds of projects.
