Lassen Volcanic National Park’s Fire Staff Offers Educational Programs This Summer.

The Fire Management staff is offering two exciting programs for the public throughout the summer starting June 29 every Thursday through August 17. At 10:30 am a slide program covering the fire program’s recent successful activities and its plans for the future will be presented in the auditorium at the Loomis Museum. This program will last 25 minutes and offer prizes for all the children who participate.

Following the slide program fire staff will once again offer the Junior Firefighter Program at 11:30 am. This popular program is designed for all those between the ages of 7 and 12. This program features the wildland fire engine and crew stationed at Manzanita Lake. Participants will discover wildland fire’s role in Lassen Volcanic National Park and become a Junior Firefighter in the National Park Service. The Junior Firefighters will learn how firefighters manage fire to protect lives, property and ensure forest health. They will learn what it takes to put out wildland fires and discover why some fires benefit the park.

Superintendent Mary Martin said “The kids will be able to go on the fire engine, use the equipment including squirting water from the fire hose at specific targets.” This program is designed to educate those children about fire prevention, fire safety and the natural role fire plays in the park’s ecosystem she added.

All of the kids will receive a Junior Firefighter card with several questions on it which they can complete during and immediately after the program. When the card is completed and turned into the fire staff the kids will be rewarded with a National Park Service Junior Firefighter Patch.
