Lassen Volcanic National Park Determines No Significant Impacts Will Result From Proposed Rehabilitation of 22 Miles of Main Park Road.
Lassen Volcanic National Park has completed a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the rehabilitation of 22 miles of the Main Park Road, beginning at the Bumpass Hell parking lot and ending at the Loomis Museum in the Manzanita Lake area. A FONSI is an explanation of why the selected actions will have no significant effects on the human environment. It is based on both the Environmental Assessment (EA) and the comments of agencies and the public. The FONSI was signed by the National Park Service Regional Director, Pacific West Region on March 13, 2006. With the signing of this document, the Park has met the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act and is clear to proceed with the project.
The project, which is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2007, will involve the asphalt re-surfacing of approximately 22 miles of roadway with site specific improvements to pull-outs, parking areas, and selected culvert crossings.
Eight miles of the Main Park Road from the Southwest Entrance to the Bumpass Hell parking lot and 2 miles from the north boundary to the Manzanita Lake campground area were rehabilitated and repaired in the summers of 2002 and 2003. This new project will complete the rehabilitation of the entire Main Park Road.
Some of the improvements include: • modifying the super elevation curve at the entrance to the Lake Helen parking lot • re-designing and delineating the parking lot at Lake Helen • improving the road and culvert at the Kings Creek Picnic Area • improving the Kings Creek Trailhead parking area • improving the Summit Lake Trailhead parking area • adding culverts at Dersch Meadows to restore natural surface water flow • re-paving the parking lot at the Devastated Area
The FONSI is posted on the park’s website at www.nps.gov/lavo under “management docs.”
