The Leave No Trace for Outdoor Ethics Center (The Center) and its Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers team are partnering with Lassen Volcanic National Park to hold a week of training, education events, and service work from July 23 to 30, 2018.Visitors can join Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers, Donielle Stevens and Aaron Hussmann for a variety of activities on Friday, July 27. Special events include an information booth at Summit Lake Trailhead from 9 am to 12 pm, a workshop outside the Loomis Museum from 2 pm to 3 pm, and an evening program at the Manzanita Lake Amphitheater from 9 pm to 9:45 pm.
“Hiking and backpacking are two of the most popular activities at Lassen Volcanic National Park,” said Superintendent Jim Richardson. “It’s important for us to work with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics to evaluate the impacts of recreational use and to help educate visitors, staff, and partners on trail and Wilderness stewardship practices.”
Over recent years, the park has experienced an increase in litter, erosion, visitor-created trails, widening of trails and backcountry campsites, and instances of bears obtaining human food. Education is a crucial component to caring for the park’s 150 miles of trails and 79,062 acres of designated Wilderness (about 75% of the park).
In addition to public education programs, the Traveling Trainers will lead workshops to facilitate Leave No Trace integration into park planning and practices and complete a trail rehabilitation project at Twin Lakes with park partners and staff.
Lassen Volcanic is one of 20 locations selected from nearly 200 nominations for Hot Spots events in 2018. As part of The Center’s Leave No Trace In Every Parkprogram, the Hot Spot initiative is now in its seventh year and has trained more than 50,000 people through its Hot Spots grassroots events.
