Hiking in the North Section

A scenic, panoramic view from a mountain overlook. Large slabs of rock in the foreground lead into a middle ground of green evergreens. In the distance are a series of rolling mountains.

NPS / Grace Kirk

Hikes in the north section of the monument offer incredible views of the East Branch Penobscot River. Observe unique geographic formations, old growth pines, and roaring rapids. Trails in the north section are open year round. In winter months, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are permitted. There are many reservable campsites and huts along the trails.

Stay safe and help protect the park! Carry in and drink plenty of water, there is no potable water anywhere in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. Pack out all trash. Do not approach or feed wildlife.
