Park staff would like to invite the public to a special program by visiting scientists, Professor Rulon Clark and Grace Freymiller. Please meet at Indian Cove Amphitheater on February 7, 2020, at 7:30 pm. Clark is a biology professor who specializes in animal behavior at San Diego State University. His work with kangaroo rats has been featured on National Geographic. Freymiller conducts studies at the Laboratory for Animal Behavior Research at San Diego State University.

The program will explore the world of Kangaroo rats. These small creatures are one of the most abundant mammals in the desert, but they face a gauntlet of desert predators, including owls, coyotes, and snakes. How does such a small rodent, roughly the size of an avocado, without teeth or claws, survive this assault? With some amazing flying leaps and mid-air kicks. Researchers have filmed these death-defying moves and have analyzed hours of near escapes.

Professor Rulon Clark and Grace Freymiller will share these gravity-defying moves and even more that make these quiet, seed-eating residents of Joshua Tree National Park and the greater southwest so special.
