Joshua Tree National Park Association announced the 2020 recipient of the Minerva Hamilton Hoyt Internship from the Pasadena Garden Club, Julijana Soares.
Minerva Hamilton Hoyt was instrumental in the establishment of Joshua Tree National Park, and this internship was established in her honor. During the internship, the recipient works to promote and protect the environment through education, conservation, and civic improvement. The internship is awarded annually to a Copper Mountain College student majoring in Environmental Studies or General Sciences.
Ms. Soares will work with the Science and Resource Stewardship Division at Joshua Tree National Park, starting in early 2020. She will perform a mix of fieldwork, data entry, information compilation, and scientific research.
Last year’s recipient, Yanina Aldao Galvan, studied the effects of early blooming Joshua trees and recently presented her findings to the Board of Trustees at Copper Mountain College and the Pasadena Garden Club Board of Directors. As a direct result of her research, she received further college scholarships. She said of the experience, “with this internship, we are literally pollinating the minds of the youth who are interested in Joshua Tree National Park.”
Congratulations to Julijana Soares on being selected for this prestigious internship.
