HOUGHTON, MICH-- Isle Royale National Park Superintendent, Phyllis Green, recently announced her retirement, effective November 1. Superintendent Green’s federal service career spanned 41 years, including 18 years at Isle Royale and 22 years in the US Forest Service. A native of Houghton, Michigan, and a graduate of Michigan Tech and Michigan State, her career in the US Forest Service was varied and included managing the 980,000 acre Ottawa National Forest. Other work assignments were at the US Forest Service Forest Products Lab in Wisconsin, Mt Baker- Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington, Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri, Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont, and Huron Manistee National Forest in Michigan.
During her tenure at Isle Royale, Green supervised a myriad of activities in the 571,790 acre maritime park with its unique wilderness environment. While at Isle Royale, Green combatted aquatic invasive species in Lake Superior, dealt with ecosystem issues related to a dwindling wolf population, spearheaded efforts to bring sustainable solar power to the remote island park, upgraded visitor facilities and moved forward with planning to preserve historic structures and wilderness. Visitation in the park rose to near record levels during the time Phyllis was at Isle Royale. She also found the time to enjoy the park and Lake Superior with her husband Jay and her family and friends. Green commented, “Isle Royale and the National Park Service people who care for this island have been a treasure and pleasure to work with over the past 18 years. I look forward to joining the ranks of visitors who explore this very special place in the future, knowing it is in good hands and a rare gem in the National Park system for future generations to enjoy.”
The public is invited to an open house on October 31 from 2 – 4 pm on the Ranger III to talk with Superintendent Green and wish her well in her retirement.
