Congratulations to the 2023 Isle Royale Artists-in-Residence

Isle Royale National Park is proud to announce the summer 2023 artists-in-residence. This year’s artists:

  • Roxanne Everett (Seattle, WA, acrylic painting)
  • Tara Kraft (Seattle, WA, oil over acrylic painting)
  • Liz Weinstein (Chicago, IL, photography)
Five alternates were chosen:
  • Amber Dietz (Detroit, MI, photography)
  • Matt Kania (Duluth, MN, oil painting)
  • Carrie Koffman (West Hartford, CT, saxophone performance)
  • Bronwyn Mauldin (Glendale, CA, writing)
  • Nicole Simpkins (Minneapolis, MN, print making)
One past artist-in-residence, Libby Meyer (music composition, 1999), will be returning to assist with the Isle Royale Teen Artist Exploration.

The artists chosen for the Teen Artist Exploration:
  • Penelope Griffioen (Detroit, MI, writing)
  • Louisiane Potvin (Prineville, OR, songwriting)
Six alternates were chosen:
  • Anna Blastic (North Muskegon, MI, gouache painting)
  • Ashleigh Davis (Escanaba, MI, colored pencil)
  • Grace Deneen (Villanova, PA, songwriting)
  • Gabrielle Myers (Hancock, MI, visual art)
  • Apoorva Panidapu (San Jose, CA, oil painting)
  • Riley Tennessen (Wautoma, WI, pencil art)
Isle Royale received 141 applications for the 2023 Artist-in-Residence Program. Artists in many mediums displayed professionalism, creativity, and a mix of traditional and modern art styles. The jury’s selections were based on artistic integrity, creativity, ability to reside in a wilderness environment, and how an artist would relate and interpret the park through their work.

Isle Royale received 87 applications for the 2023 Teen Artist Exploration. The Isle Royale Teen Artist Exploration provides teens the opportunity to develop their art through experiencing wilderness, and is open to all visual and performing artists, writers, and composers ages 13 to 18 at time of participation.These programs are co-sponsored by Isle Royale National Park, Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association, and the Copper Country Community Arts Council.
