National Park Service Releases Draft Environmental Impact Statement for a Wilderness Stewardship Plan at Isle Royale National Park

HOUGHTON, MICH – The National Park Service announces a Notice of Availability for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for a Wilderness Stewardship Plan (plan/EIS) at Isle Royale National Park. With this announcement, the National Park Service introduces a broad range of management actions for managing wilderness and cultural resources within wilderness inside the park boundary. In addition, this plan determines preservation and use of historic structures in potential and designated wilderness. This plan/EIS is prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) and other applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
 

The plan/EIS describes how wilderness resources would be affected by the no action alternative and two action alternatives that address recreation opportunities and other management of wilderness, including the management of historic properties within wilderness. A public comment period is open for 60 days, concluding on September 26, 2023. The draft EIS with Appendices, newsletter, virtual public meeting information, and link to submit comments is available on the NPS Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) website at: ParkPlanning - Wilderness Stewardship Plan/EIS (nps.gov).
