SAN FRANCISCO—The National Park Service (NPS) announced today that it has awarded a 30-year lease to Headlands Center for the Arts, a long-time non-profit partner, for seven buildings and associated grounds at Fort Barry within the Marin Headlands of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The lease commenced on January 1, 2024, and will allow Headlands Center for the Arts to continue its 42-year history of providing arts-based programs within the park.

The local non-profit organization hosts the park’s artist in residence program, artist fellowships, and programs for the public including open houses, artist-guided walks, exhibitions, and creative performances.

“As an arts institution which centers artistic process, our grounds within the park have been a core part of what supports and feeds the artists and public we serve,” said Mari Robles, Executive Director of Headlands Center for the Arts. “So much of our organization’s history resides in the park’s artist-renovated buildings and grounds. We are honored to continue our long-standing partnership with the park and remain steadfast in our commitment to transformation and dialogue over the next 30 years.”

As part of the lease, Headlands Center for the Arts will complete capital improvements exceeding $18 million for historic building rehabilitation and site improvements that will enhance the experience of artists and visitors alike. The improvements will make all three of the campus’s public buildings accessible and will address deferred maintenance, restoration of historic building features, and site enhancements focused on parking, walkways, and outdoor gathering space.

“Headlands Center for the Arts became one of the park’s earliest partners in 1982 and since then has furthered the park’s mission by enabling new and diverse audiences to experience the GGNRA through an artistic lens,” said David Smith, Superintendent of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. “We are excited to continue this long-term partnership through a 30-year lease agreement.”

Headlands Center for the Arts serves thousands of visitors each year through their programming and is one of various NPS partners operating in the Marin Headlands.
