National Park Service invites proposals for Alcatraz Island Passenger Ferry Service

Exciting opportunity to serve San Francisco’s most visited landmark

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The National Park Service (NPS) announced today that it is seeking proposals for operation of passenger ferry service to Alcatraz Island and other associated visitor services within Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

“This is an exciting opportunity to partner with the National Park Service to provide service to one of San Francisco’s top visitor destinations,” said Laura E. Joss, Golden Gate National Recreation Area General Superintendent. “We welcome all interested operators to submit a proposal.”

A National Historic Landmark, Alcatraz Island welcomes over 1.5 million visitors each year and is among the most popular destinations in San Francisco. All visitors to Alcatraz arrive by boat from San Francisco. NPS is seeking a concessioner who will provide safe, environmentally-friendly boat transportation as well as a high-quality visitor welcome and orientation to Alcatraz Island, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the National Park Service, and the Port of San Francisco.

In addition to service to Alcatraz, the concessioner is invited to develop a new park cruise service to highlight the natural, historical, and cultural sites of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area from aboard a boat on the Bay.

NPS is finalizing a General Agreement with the Port of San Francisco for the long term use of Pier 31½ and adjacent facilities for the ferry operation. The prospectus identifies improvements the concessioner will be expected to make to the site to better welcome visitors. Golden Gate National Recreation Area completed the Record of Decision for the Alcatraz Ferry Embarkation Plan/Environmental Impact Statement on January 11, 2018, selecting Pier 31½ as the site for passenger ferry service, coupled with actions to rehabilitate the historic property.

The prospectus and additional information are available at: https://www.nps.gov/commercialservices/goga001-19.html. The Alcatraz Ferry Embarkation Project Record of Decision is available at: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome.cfm?projectID=4135.
