Electric Bikes in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

The National Park Service announced a policy on August 29 for electric bicycle (e-bike) use in national parks. The policy allows e-bikes on roads and trails where traditional bikes are allowed. The new NPS policy defines electric bikes as having motors of 750 watts (1 horsepower) or less that provide assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and cease to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 28 miles per hour.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area has determined that because it currently has no trails designated for bicycle use, electric bicycles are only allowed on authorized roads. Information about suggested roads that would provide scenic bicycle use is available at on the Mountain Biking page.

The park is currently working on planning efforts to authorize bicycle use along some park trails and will be announcing public involvement opportunities for local communities and other partners in the future. This effort will include a formal planning process and publication of a Written Determination in the Federal Register.
