Glacier National Park Road Update

WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Officials at Glacier National Park report that several park roads are now open for the season to vehicular traffic. The Two Medicine Road, the Camas Road, the Kelly Camp Road, the Apgar Lookout Road, the Quarter Circle Bridge Road and the Many Glacier Road are all open. In Polebridge, visitors can now travel approximately 6.5 miles to the Big Prairie area. Visitors can also hike/bike beyond the vehicle gate to Bowman or Kintla Lake.

On the Going-to-the-Sun (Sun) Road, visitors can travel by vehicle approximately 15.5 miles from West Glacier to Avalanche and 5.5 miles from St. Mary to Rising Sun. On the east side, a hiker/biker closure at Jackson Glacier Overlook is in effect. No pioneering work will occur on the west side of the Sun Road over the weekend. Therefore, no hiker/biker closures will be posted on the west side until May 1 and visitors can travel freely beyond the Avalanche gate closure.

Visitors are reminded to be alert for snowplows and other heavy equipment on park roads as well as areas of ice and/or slush, avalanche zones and/or fallen rock. Additionally, spring snowstorms can cause hazardous driving conditions and/or temporary road closures.

For park and trip planning information, the Apgar Visitor Center (AVC) is open 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. April 28-30. The AVC is also open daily, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., starting May 1.

Winter entrance fees, valid though April 30, are $15 for a seven day single vehicle entry and $10 for a single entrant (a biker, walker, or motorcyclist). Summer entrance rates, beginning May 1, are $25/single vehicle and $12/single entrant. An annual pass, good for unlimited entry to Glacier for one year from the date of purchase, is $35. Even when the entrance stations are not staffed, entrance fees are still required. Follow the posted instructions to pay the entrance fee at the self-pay stations at each entrance.

Current road conditions, updated as conditions change, are available on the park’s Web site at https://www.nps.gov/applications/glac/roadstatus/roadstatus.cfm. Road conditions are also available by calling 511, the Montana Department of Transportation Traveler Information System. If your phone does not support 511, call 1-800-226-7623. Both numbers are toll-free. Select “Glacier Park Tourist Information” from the main menu to hear Glacier’s road report.
