Saturday, October 20, 2018 marks the annual return of military re-enactors (and an English influence) to George Washington Birthplace National Monument. The site will be hosting an encampment and firing demonstration by His Majesty’s Marines and the 5th Battalion, Cumberland County Militia. The encampment will take place from 10-4 and musket firing demonstrations will be conducted at 11:30 1:30 and 3:00.
During the encampment visitors will be able to enjoy a variety of displays and activities common to 18th century camp life. Younger visitors will be able to participate in a variety of hands on activities like cartridge rolling.
Although British soldiers never occupied Popes Creek Plantation, British military life played an essential part of the makeup of the Washington family. George Washington’s service to the British and Continental Armies was the culmination of militia and regular military service by almost every Washington male since the family immigrated to America in 1657.
His Majesty’s Marines and the 5th Battalion, Cumberland County Militia are elite re-enacting groups that emphasize authenticity in uniform and activities. Their appearance at George Washington Birthplace National Monument is guaranteed to fascinate and educate all who visit.
The historic area will be open from 9-5 on October 20, but tours will be suspended that day so that visitors can participate in this very special event.
Admission to George Washington Birthplace National Monument is free, and there is no charge for any activities on October 20.
More information is available through Facebook, Twitter, www.nps.gov/gewa or (804) 224-1732.
George Washington Birthplace National Monument is located on Route 204, two miles off of Virginia State Route 3, 38 miles east of Fredericksburg, VA and 11 miles west of Montross, VA.
