COLONIAL BEACH, VA — George Washington Birthplace National Monument will host a virtual public talk on June 21, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. to present information found in a new study titled Upon This Land: Seven Generations of the Washington Family and the Residents of Popes Creek and Mattox Neck. During the upcoming meeting there will be an opportunity for the public to ask the author questions about the new study.In March 2023, historian Dr. Philip Levy completed a study to expand understanding of the Washington family within broader geographic and historical contexts. The study was prepared under a cooperative agreement between The Organization of American Historians and The National Park Service. It focuses on agricultural history, family history, labor history (including the histories and identities of enslaved laborers), between 1650 and 1813. The study benefits from recent scholarship on slavery, women, plantation economies, and material life in the early Tidewater Region of Virginia.
